Artist and filmmaker Mirta (Neda Rahmanian) wants to realize her dream project in this film; making a film about the legendary singer and diva Oum Kulthum. Her film explores the struggles, sacrifices and the price of the success of the female artist Oum Kulthum in a male-dominated society.
The story, which takes place in Egypt, but is filmed in Morocco because there it was easier to acquire permession, reflects the personal life of both the Egyptian icon Oum Kulthum and the Iranian filmmaker Shirin Neshat. Two ‘power women’ who pursue their passion and career, at all consquenses.
In her work photographer, film and video artist Shirin Neshat concentrates on the ambiguity of borders in Islam, between reality and beauty, between the holy and the profane, between reality and magic. Neshat was born in Iran in 1957 and now lives and works in New York. The way in which she shapes her theme represents a field of tension between her own background and Western culture.
