A Cinematic History of Iraq and Palestine

Mohanad Yaqubi, a filmmaker, producer, and one of the founders of the Ramallah-based production house Idioms Film, is also one of the founders of the politically engaged collective Subversive Films, focusing on the selection, organization, and presentation of films. He has been a researcher at the School of the Art (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium, since 2017.

Yaqubi’s research delves into archive structures within cross-border solidarity movements, questioning politics, aesthetics, and cinema. He also explores the phenomenon of “imperfect archives” as a mechanism for connecting living memories.

The workshop, titled “A Cinematic History of Iraq and Palestine,” focuses on the Tokyo Reels archive research project. This project deals with the politics and aesthetics of restoring revolutionary cinema, as well as the distribution of international solidarity cinema. Tokyo Reels is a collection of 20 films collected and preserved in Japan over the past 30 years. These films have been restored, digitized, subtitled, and given new exhibition opportunities thanks to Subversive Film.

The films in the collection were produced by various filmmakers, including Palestinians, Arabs, Japanese, and other international filmmakers. Among them are three films produced by Iraqi filmmakers, two of which are about the Palestinian struggle and one about the modernity project in Iraq after the end of British colonialism.

The workshop will include an introduction to the Tokyo Reels collection, followed by the screening of these three films. Afterward, there will be a discussion with renowned Iraqi director Kassem Hawal about the history and reality of political film production in the Arab region and solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.

Mohanad Yaqubi, een filmmaker, producent en een van de oprichters van het in Ramallah gevestigde productiehuis Idioms Film, is een van de oprichters van het politiek geëngageerde collectief Subversive Films, dat zich richt op selectie, organisatie en presentatie van films. Hij verblijft sinds 2017 als onderzoeker aan de School of the Art (KASK) in Gent, België.

Yaqubi houdt zich bezig met onderzoek naar archiefstructuren binnen landgrensoverschrijdende solidariteitsbewegingen en stelt vragen over politiek, esthetiek en cinema aan de kaak. Tevens houdt hij zich bezig met het fenomeen van ‘imperfecte archieven’ als een mechanisme om levende herinneringen te verbinden. Zijn eerste speelfilm, Off Frame AKA Revolution Until Victory (2016), werd vertoond op vele festivals ter wereld, waaronder TIFF, Berlinale, Cinéma du réel, Dubai IFF en Carthago. Zijn tweede speelfilm, R21 AKA Restoring Solidarity (2022), werd vertoond op Documenta 15, IDFA, Marrakesh FF, True/False en andere gerenommeerde festivals.

De workshop, getiteld “Een Filmische Geschiedenis van Irak en Palestina”, richt zich op het Tokyo Reels-archiefonderzoeksproject. Dit project behandelt de politiek en esthetiek van het restaureren van revolutionaire cinema, evenals distributie van internationale solidariteitscinema. Tokyo Reels is een verzameling van 20 films die de afgelopen 30 jaar in Japan zijn verzameld en bewaard. Deze films zijn gerestaureerd, gedigitaliseerd, ondertiteld en krijgen nieuwe vertoonmogelijkheden dankzij Subversive Film.

De films in de collectie zijn geproduceerd door verschillende filmmakers, waaronder Palestijnen, Arabieren, Japanners en andere internationale filmmakers. Hieronder zijn drie films geproduceerd door Iraakse filmmakers, waarvan er twee gaan over de Palestijnse strijd en één over het moderniteitsproject in Irak na het einde van het Britse kolonialisme.

Tijdens de workshop zal er een introductie worden gegeven over de Tokyo Reels-collectie, gevolgd door de vertoning van deze drie films. Daarna vindt er een discussie plaats met de gerenommeerde Iraakse regisseur Kassem Hawal over de geschiedenis en realiteit van politieke filmproductie in de Arabische regio en de solidariteit met de Palestijnse strijd.
